‘This Could Be a Movie, This could be a final act, we don’t need these, happy endings’
Just a few of the words sung so brilliantly and emotionally by Matthew Davies-Kreye on such an emotionally charged evening.
20th May marked the penultimate ever show for Funeral For A Friend after 15 years as a band, the Welsh rockers bowed out in an incredible final tour, spanning many UK venues.
The tour was due to conclude in April, but due to the original The Shepherd’s Bush Empire having some structural issues, they had to move the show to the slightly bigger, 1,300 capacity O2 Forum in London’s Kentish Town.
On this night they played through Hours, 2005’s follow up to their 2003 album Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation (Which they played on the Saturday, their final EVER show)
As they came out, there was no fancy music, no elaborate entrances. Just five individuals taking to the stage for the penultimate time.
The band blasted through All The Rage and Streetcar (which was the highest placing single in the charts from this album – 15th) there was already a sense of just what an emotional night this was going to be.
The first huge crowd reaction of the night was when they hit the first notes of Roses For The Dead and it carried on into Hospitality, Drive and Monsters.
Next came, and understandably so… The biggest cheer of the night for History such an emotional performance not just from the band, but from the crowd too. This was such a great performance.
Throughout the night, Matt told us that he was going to try and explain the meaning behind some of the songs, something he wasn’t intent on doing at the start. Some of them were about Politics, and that Alvarez was about LGBT rights and expressing that love.
Matt takes the Guitar from Kris and plays through I Am The Arsonist on his own. The entire band return for Sixteen and 1%. They deviate away from Hours to blast through Into OblivionThe band end with Juneau and Escape Artists Never Die, and get a great crowd response. This was an amazing night with a great band who unfortunately we won’t be able to see anymore. Great work FFAF thanks for getting memories
