Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget trailer gives glimpse of a changed cast

One of the most defining children’s movies of its era is about to get a long awaited sequel. Chicken Run became the highest grossing stop-motion animated film of all time when it was released in 2000, and Aardman will hope to have similar success with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget when it hits Netflix on 15th December.

Mrs. Tweedy is back to give the cast a hard time again, but someone who won’t be returning is voice actor Julia Sawalha, who played the role of Ginger in the original movie.

Sawalha released a statement in 2020 sharing her disappointment with the news that she wouldn’t be reprising the role of Ginger, due to an apparent aging issue. The 55 year old said “The reason they gave is that my voice now sounds ‘too old’ and they want a younger actress to reprise the role.”

Voicing the chief chicken this time will be Thandiwe Newton who is just five years her junior. Another change to the cast will be Zachary Levi replacing Mel Gibson as Rocky.

While this news has left some fans disappointed, there should still be enough nostalgia and intrigue around the franchise to bring fans back and introduce the loveable characters to a new audience.

Here’s the trailer and synopsis for Dawn of the Nugget:

For Ginger and the flock, all is at stake when the dangers of the human world come home to roost; they’ll stop at nothing even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk to save chicken-kind. This time, they’re breaking in!
