Roman Reigns steps down from WWE due to battle with Leukaemia

Shocking news out of this week’s WWE Raw with the announcement that WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns will be stepping away from the wrestling world to focus on his battle with Leukaemia. Raw kicked off with Reigns making his way to the ring with a look on his face that hinted that this was not a regular appearance for the WWE Superstar and soon revealed that to be the case as he ‘pulled back the curtain’ with some personal information firstly with the mentioning of this real-life first name Joe. This is something that may not sound like a big deal to most but the acknowledgement of a real-life persona outside of the WWE Universe is not something that happens within the actual show often at all and was a telling sign that some important news was about to come.

Roman Reigns would go on to explain that he had previously fought Leukaemia back in 2008 but that the illness had recently come back for the 33 year old as fans in the arena turned their pantomime cheers and boos into real-life gasps. The wrestler from the legendary Anoa’i family went on to say “I’m not going to lie, I’ll take every prayer you can send my way but I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m not looking for you to feel bad for me because I have faith” and would later say “I want to make one thing clear: By no means is this a retirement speech because after I’m done whupping leukaemia’s ass, I’m coming back home“.

The heart wrenching segment would come to an end as Roman made his way up the ramp to be joined by his brothers in The Shield, two men that have been alongside Roman throughout his WWE career in both storyline and real-life. Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins would initiate their trademark fist bump with Roman with emotion running high as Ambrose looked blankly into the packed arena and Rollins could not stop the flow of tears down his cheeks. A truly emotional moment that will go down in the history of the WWE.

We at Rebellious Noise would like to extend our prayers to Roman Reigns and the rest of the Anoa’i family at this difficult time and thank them for all of the great memories in the WWE so far, we are in your corner for this one Roman.

WWE came to London with some big news for British Wrestling fans as legendary British wrestler Johnny Saint announced to fans in attendance at the Royal Albert Hall for night one of the 2018 WWE United Kingdom Tournament that the company would be launching their own permanent UK division. Triple H went on to then give a good amount of information on the new UK brand stating that there would be a NXT UK Women’s division and NXT UK Tag Team division to go alongside the already established WWE UK mens singles championship. The former World Champion also announced that the company had already planned tapings over the next few months around the UK and told the live audience that Johnny Saint would be the brand’s General Manager.

Daniel Bryan OFFICIALLY Cleared to return

Finally, after two long years of medical evaluations, WWE‘s medical Director Dr. Joseph Maroon, has officially given the ‘YES, YES, YES’ to Daniel Bryan to return to in ring action.

The former WWE World, Intercontinental, United States and Tag Team Champion had seen numerous neurosurgeons, neurologists and concussion experts all who cleared him, but finally got the all clear today from Maroon. He was forced to retire in 2016 and took a job as Smackdown LIVE’s General Manager.

It was always Bryan’s goal to get back in the ring, and there was speculation he could end up in NJPW or Ring of Honor if WWE didn’t clear him by the time his contract expired, rumoured to be in September this year.

With WrestleMania just around the corner, what could this mean for Bryan?

There are some dream matches for Bryan we are surely looking forward to seeing, and how WWE incorporates him into the storylines will be interesting to see.

Kevin Smith survives “massive heart attack”

Cult film maker Kevin Smith has announced that he had suffered a “massive heart attack” after a stand-up show last night. The Clerks director and comedian had not long got off stage when he began to feel nauseous, eventually throwing up and broke into sweats and heavy chest pains. Thankfully Smith had friends around him as he was due to perform again afterwards but when alarm bells started going off for those around him they called an ambulance. Kevin was taken to Glendale Hospital and the doctor that saved his life told the comedian that he had a 100% blockage of of his LAD artery, also referred to as the “Widow-Maker” because of the commonality of not surviving such an attack.

Kevin Smith has been on quite a health journey the past few years when it comes to his weight and has looked considerably slimmer when compared to the days of his “too fat to fly” days, when he was infamously thrown off of a flight because of his weight. But it seems his weight has ‘yo-yo’d‘ a few times recently and his statement refers to having to make some lifestyle changes and questions the possibility of becoming Vegan. Kevin played Silent Bob in the infamous Mallrats, Chasing Amy & Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and other movies from the View Askewniverse universe which were created by the star and alluded to the fact he would have missed out on playing the character once again if his time would indeed be up.

Much of Kevin’s full statement via his Facebook page focussed on his fear of dying over the years and the peace he felt when his biggest fear was a very real possibility. The 47 year old said “But generally speaking, I was okay with the end, if this was gonna be it. I’ve gotten to do so many cool things and I’ve had so many adventures – how could I be shitty about finally paying the tab” and went on to thank those that saved his life and show appreciation for his loved ones.

We are thankful that Kevin’s tab wasn’t ready to be paid yet and wish him a speedy recovery.

January 2018 Transfer Window Round-Up

It’s now February 1st which means only one thing. The January Transfer window is officially CLOSED! Here, we look at some of the biggest deals of this record breaking window.
The first big deal of this window was undoubtedly Virgil Van Dijk’s long awaited move from Southampton to Liverpool. A deal which many expected to happen in the summer, but eventually happened very early on in this window. £75m

The next big deal, and a surprising one, which had been mooted for a while was Ross Barkley joining Chelsea for £35m. This deal almost happened in the summer with Barkley supposedly walking out of a medical, but eventually, Chelsea got their man who had fallen out of favour at Everton.

Arsenal kicked off their window with the signing of young Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos. He was the first signing of a surprisingly busy transfer window for Arsenal, with more ins and outs.

With bids for Oliver Giroud and Diego Costa rejected in the summer, Everton finally got the striker they were after, in prolific Turkish international Cenk Tosun. There was a lot of interest in his services, with Newcastle reportedly also interested in his signature.

The next deal was the biggest of the lot, valued at around £146m, Phillipe Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool, this was another deal which was rumoured to be happening in the summer but never came to fruition. Barcelona though held out, and eventually got their man.

Young midfielder Francis Coquelin, who was thought of quite highly from some in North London, was sold to Valencia by Arsenal.

Claude Puel’s first signing as Leicester Manager was Fousseni Diabate who they signed from French Ligue 2 Club Ajaccio. The last two signings they had from France weren’t bad either with N’golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez the others signed from the French Leagues.

Sam Allardyce spent some £20m of the Ross Barkley money, splashing out on Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, who was somewhat out of favour at Arsenal, a great move for Walcott, with the World Cup coming up in the summer.

Brighton smashed their transfer record, bringing in Dutch Striker Jurgen Locadia for £14.1m from PSV Eindhoven where he had scored 9 goals in 14 games this season. However, his debut has been delayed due to a slight hamstring niggle.

Then came the most shocking deal of the entire window. With Alexis Sanchez nailed on to join Manchester City last summer in a £60m deal which never came to fruition, there were enquiries made to obtain his signature again this time around. City, though, were unwilling to pay the fee Arsenal were asking for him, and it paved the way for their biggest rivals, Manchester United to swoop, and pull off arguably one of the great deals of this window. No cash changed hands, just Number 7 Shirts, with Alexis Sanchez joining United taking the famous jersey, and Arsenal and Sanchez’s vacated one taken up by Henrikh Mkhitaryan. A great signing for Arsenal, and one which arguably both sides will be happy with.

After Theo Walcott joined Everton, he came straight into their team, meaning that Aaron Lennon was free to leave. He was snapped up by Sean Dyche at Burnley, in what could turn into a very shrewd deal.

Newcastle signed their first reinforcement in the window, as Kenedy joined from Chelsea on loan. With little game time under his belt at Chelsea, could this be the move which kick starts his career in England?

Having lost Frank de Boer after just four games this season, new Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson didn’t have anytime to bring in any of his own players in the Summer window. He made his first signing of this window bringing in Polish Centre Half Jaroslaw Jach for an undisclosed fee.

Southampton were the next club to break their transfer record, splashing out £19.1m on Argentinian striker Guido Carillo from Monaco. We have seen some great Argentinian Strikers in the Premier League over the years, and Southampton will undoubtedly be looking forward to this one.

David Moyes did his first piece of business at West Ham, by bringing in Joao Mario from Inter Milan on Loan for the rest of the season. He had been linked with a number of clubs, but ultimately TheLondon Stadium, and West Ham proved to be his destination.

With the form of Liverpool’s front three, and the lure of a World Cup around the corner, Daniel Sturridge felt moving from Liverpool was the best idea. There were no shortage of clubs vying for his signature, with Inter Milan, Newcastle and Sevilla all looking to sign the England International. It would therefore come as a bit of a shock to see him end up joining West Bromwich Albion on loan until the end of the season.

Chelsea continued their trend of sending youngsters out on loan with Charly Musonda joining SPFL Champions CelticBrighton re-signed old player and cult hero Leonardo Ulloa from Leicester on Loan until the end of the season whilst West Ham sold Diafra Sakho to Rennes, when it was expected he could join Crystal Palace.

Aymeric Laporte became Manchester City’s record signing, joining the Citizens for £57m after initially rejecting their interest in October. He has provided defensive reinforcements paving the way for Eliqiam Mangala to join Everton on loan.

Arsenal’s search for a Sanchez replacement could have been found, in what has been named as ‘The Transfer Triangle Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng joined Arsenal for £60m, with his replacement at Dortmund being Michy Batshuayi from Chelsea on Loan and Oliver Giroud then taking the place of Batshuayi at Chelsea for a fee rumoured to be around £18m. This seems like good business all around.

More Premier League business from elsewhere in the world as Tottenham splashed the cash paying £25m to bring in Lucas Moura from Paris St. Germain and Senegalese Midfielder Badou Ndiaye completed a £14m move from Galatasaray to Stoke, whilst internally Andre Ayew rejoined Swansea from West Ham for an initial £18m, linking up with his brother Jordan and Andy King also joined the Swans on loan from Leicester.

Newcastle finally signed a striker, after missing out on Sturridge and Tosun, by bringing in Algerian striker Islam Slimani from Leicester on loan, there was also another loan deal on Tyneside as goalkeeper Martin Dubravka joined from Sparta Prague.

West Ham signed young Jordan Hugill from Preston for an undisclosed fee as a replacement for Ayew.

Teams generally don’t like this window, but you couldn’t tell, judging by the business which has been done. The window was bookended by the most expensive deals with most clubs strengthening. What effect, if any, will it have on the remainder of the season? Let’s wait and see, Will United get closer to City with Sanchez? Will Sturridge and Slimani fire West Brom and Newcastle to safety? We look forward to finding out.

Vince McMahon announces second go at Professional American Football League XFL

It’s been 17 years since the one and only season of XFL hit American Football fields but its legacy has continued to create the intrigue of “What could have been?” and now we may just get the answer. WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has announced that he will be giving American Football one more go as his company Alpha Entertainment embark on a new venture to rival the NFL.

The new XFL will return in 2020 and is being described as “Football Reborn” and McMahon says “We’re going to give the game of football back to the fans“. Current plans involve 8 teams that will not follow the typical franchise model as seen in most American sports, each time will have a 40 man roster and the goal will be to head towards either of the two Semi Finals and progress to the ultimate goal of winning the seasons Championship game. The XFL season is currently set to be starting at the beginning of the calendar year to once again capitalise on the NFL off season.

Whilst the original XFL did fold after a controversial season that saw TV ratings fall throughout the year it did also  have quite the positive influence on the sport and with its most prominent league the NFL picking up on some of the XFL’s innovations such as their sky-cam and sideline interviews. However Vince McMahon mentioned that this time round there would be no crossover of WWE and XFL talent, something that the league came under fire for before when it used Wrestling stars such as The Rock personally appearing at games and Jim Ross and Jesse Ventura on commentary.

Questions surrounding a possible return of the infamous Football League arose soon after the fantastic ESPN 30 for 30 documentary.

McMahon has mentioned that this Football League is open to new ideas from cutting Half Time to less Commercial breaks. So, what would you like to see different in American Football? Are you ready for the XFL?

More news as we get it…
