Wayne Shaw resigns from Sutton United FC over Pie eating controversy

The ‘Roly Poly Goalie’ Wayne Shaw got a huge amount of media coverage since his team Sutton United FC were drawn against Arsenal in the FA Cup. The Goalkeeping Coach and back up keeper for the non-league team enjoyed plenty of attention on social media as he became a representative for them. But things have ended with a slightly sour taste as the Football Association revealed they would be investigating wether or not the Player eating a Pie on the sidelines was in fact a breach of rules after Sun Bets who had temporarily sponsored the side had announced that they would be taking bets at 8/1 for if the Sutton United player would eat a Pie during the game on Live TV.

The Goalkeeper has admitted to knowing about the bookies offer and has consequently resigned from the club amidst investigations. The FA said “We are investigating to establish whether there has been any breach of The FA rules relating to betting.” The Gambling commission have also confirmed that they have also been investigating the matter.

Shaw stated after the game that his fellow players had asked him about the bet and he had said that he hadn’t eaten all day so he “might give it a go later on”, which he did once all substitutes had been used for the South London side. The Goalkeeper was asked about wether or not he knew of anybody taking part in the bet and said “I think there were a few people. Obviously we (Sutton’s players) are not allowed to bet. I think a few of the mates and a few of the fans”.

Manager Paul Doswell has expressed his disappointment after waking up to the controversy and stated “Wayne has offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon and that’s been accepted. It’s a very sad end to what was a very, very good story.

It may not be all bad for Wayne Shaw though as it looks like the super marker chain Morrison’s are going to hire him as a Pie taster and give him a years supply for free. The companies Chief Pie Buyer Tessa Callaghan said “We’re always looking for the best talent to taste our pies and make sure they hit the back of the net.” We hope things work out for the big man!
