Wayne Rooney equals Sir Bobby Charlton’s Record

Wayne Rooney has today written his name into the Manchester United history books by becoming the clubs joint all time leading goalscorer.

Rooney scored opening goal in the FA Cup tie to equal the record of 249 goals set by Sir Bobby Charlton, which had stood since 1973.

Sir Bobby, who last season had a stand named after him at Old Trafford, took 758 games to reach his total, with Rooney taking a considerably shorter amount of games, doing so in only 543.

Only time will tell when Rooney will eventually be United’s outright record holder.

It’s not the first time Rooney has taken one of the great Sir Bobby’s records, as he became England’s all time leading scorer back in 2015, when he scored his 50th Goal from the penalty spot against San Marino.

There will always be people voicing their own opinions on Rooney, and how his record hauls have been against considerably smaller teams, but we doubt for one second that Rooney will care one bit, as his name sits proudly at the top of the goalscoring charts. At the age of just 31, there is still plenty of time for Rooney to go on and score more goals, the question is how many? and how many more will come in the red of Manchester United?

Our sincerest congratulations go out to Wayne Rooney, on cementing his legacy of one of the greatest strikers of our generation, and in the history of Manchester United Football Club!
