Grime icon Skepta has received the cherry on top of his already brilliant 2016 cake by winning this years Mercury Prize. The Boy Better Know artist has beat the bookies favourite David Bowie, who many believed would win posthumously for his album “Black Star” which was released just before his death earlier this year. But it was another Londoner who took this years prize.
Skepta is only the second Grime artist to win the award after Dizzee Rascal won it back in 2003 after his break through album “Boy in Da Corner“. Skepta has been around for much longer than his fellow Grime artist had when he won it, with “Konnichiwa” being his fourth album to date.
The resurgence of Grime in recent years has meant that veterans of the genre are now receiving mainstream recognition which in some cases is even bigger than the first wave of Grime music gave them in the early 2000’s.
So, it’s a big congratulations from us at Rebellious Noise to Skepta. A well deserved win after a great year so far for the Londoner.
